Afterschool Cornucopia is a nonprofit educational corporation dedicated to offering a wide variety of afterschool enrichment classes.

Our classes meet at Linwood E. Howe Elementary School at 4100 Irving Place in Culver City. Unless otherwise noted in the individual class descriptions, classes will begin on Monday, April 8th and end on Friday, June 14th. Classes are held once a week. This session will be 10 weeks long. Most of our classes are one hour long. Fees and number of classes have been adjusted for the following school holidays:

Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis. You can register on our website through our registration page.

Payment #

Payment can be made by Venmo, PayPal, check, or cash.

To pay with Venmo, please send a payment to @Afterschool-Cornucopia and be sure to include your child(ren)’s name(s) and “Lin Howe” (or “L.H.”) in the note.

How to Attend Class #

Students in Aftercare #

Please be sure to inform your child’s aftercare program about their Cornucopia enrollments; specifically which days they have Cornucopia. If your child does not have aftercare on days when they’re taking Cornucopia classes, please see the following section about students not in aftercare. If your child is in an Office of Child Development aftercare program, you’ll need to submit a waiver to the OCD.

Our staff will pick up all students in aftercare and bring them to class. When Cornucopia classes end, we will return students to their respective aftercare.

Students not in Aftercare #

Please be sure to inform your child’s daytime teacher about their Cornucopia enrollments; specifically which days they have Cornucopia.

  • Younger students (grades TK–1) will be retrieved from their dismissal gate by Cornucopia staff.
  • Older students (grades 2–5) will walk themselves to their Cornucopia classes. If they don’t know where to go, or need help with anything, they can find Cornucopia staff by the outdoor lunch area, or get help at the school office.

After class, Cornucopia teachers will bring students to the gate next to the school office on Irving to await pickup.

Due to the pandemic restrictions, parents are not invited to come on campus.

Absences #

If you cannot attend a class, you may attend another class offered on a different day as a make-up during the same term. Please email [email protected] to arrange a make-up.

Refunds #

If you withdraw from a class within the first four weeks of the session, we will refund a prorated portion of your fee corresponding to all forthcoming classes.

If classes are cancelled for any reason, we will refund a prorated portion of your fee corresponding to all cancelled classes.

Late Pickups #

If you are more than 10 minutes late to pick your child up, we may charge you a late pickup fee of $1 per minute.

Taught by Teacher Sarah, ASL Interpreter in training, movement artist and instructor. Enter the world of silent communication with American Sign Language. This program transforms learning ASL into an exciting exploration, blending interactive games, animated storytelling, and hands-on activities. Students will not only master the fundamentals of ASL but cultivate confidence in expressing themselves. Through the lens of Deaf culture and history, students will gain a deeper understanding of diversity. Empower your child with a valuable, lifelong skill, fostering inclusive communication and meaningful connections. No prior knowledge necessary.

Under the guidance of Coach Lauri Powell and taught by EJ Moore, a former practice player for the UNLV Men’s Basketball team. “Basketball FUN” offers a dynamic one-hour instructional class. The primary objective of this class is to provide participants with a solid foundation in basketball fundamentals, while also incorporating enjoyable games that revolve around essential skills, physical fitness, sportsmanship, fair play, teamwork, and personal growth. Whether you’re a beginner seeking to learn the basics or an individual looking to enhance your existing skills, this class is designed to cater to a wide range of skill levels.


Bento Cooking #

Taught by Ms. Noriko, a skilled cooking instructor specializing in Kyaraben, we explore the art of crafting character bento. Kyaraben, short for Anime Character in a Bento, involves shaping ingredients into familiar characters like Pokemon, Totoro, Hello Kitty, as well as animals, flowers, and other animated images. This culinary approach not only enhances food presentation but also adds an element of fun to both the cooking process and the dining experience. Join us to learn how to create delightful character shapes, convey the joy of handmade Japanese cuisine, and make your food presentation adorable. Come be a part of our enjoyable learning experience!


Breakdancing #

Taught by the WeBreak Hip-Hop Dance Company. Our breakdancing class is designed for both beginners with little or no experience and intermediate breakers that have experience dancing. We use our proprietary curriculum to teach the basic and intermediate concepts and moves of breaking. Together, we’ll focus on learning moves to express ourselves through dance, building confidence and developing a positive environment through helping one another; all while having a great time. On the last day, we will have a show for family at the end of class.


Chess #

Taught by Mr. Jeffreys, author of 3 chess books, including 150 Deadly Checkmates. Mr. Jeffreys has been teaching his fun and enthusiastic style of chess to children for the past 30 years at schools throughout Los Angeles. This class is for children who already know how to play chess. Chess teaches focus, patience, and how to win and lose with grace. In addition to learning chess tactics, strategies and checkmates, the benefits of chess include: improved ability to focus, concentrate, to think ahead, and to consider multiple solutions to a problem before settling on the very best option. Each class begins with an instructive and always entertaining 20-25 minute chess lesson with Mr. Jeffreys on his large chess demo board. This is followed by the students doing battle against each other on the provided chess sets (which are regularly sanitized).


Coding with Scratch #

Taught by Mr. Nick, math tutor, B.S. in Math. Students will build their own programs, animations, and games in the block-based programming language Scratch. Developed by MIT, Scratch is a great way for kids to learn basic programming concepts. It allows coders to build their programs by dragging and dropping colorful coding blocks instead of typing out complicated syntax. We will work our way through a variety of projects, ranging from simple animations to building our own mini-games. This class is a good opportunity for students to familiarize themselves with the basics of computational thinking, as well as a chance for them to express themselves creatively. No prior experience or knowledge necessary.


Comic Book Creators #

Taught by ACE Enrichment staff. This session, students will discover their inner Superhero through the creation of their very own comic book! In this awesome class, students will learn how to build characters, story, and the step-by-step process of creating a comic book. Through sketching, creating self-portraits, & developing backgrounds, you’ll transform yourself and your everyday surroundings into an amazing comic book. Our instructor will guide our illustrators as they Brainstorm, Storyboard, Pencil, Ink, and Color. After the session is over, the comic pages are taken back to our studio and professionally edited and printed. When complete, the comic books will be delivered to the students and are theirs to keep. Returning students are encouraged-new comic book creators welcome. No art experience necessary.


Cooking #

Taught by Chef Angela & staff, urban farmer, chef and teacher. Students will learn, make, and take home a new recipe from world cuisines each week. Students work with teachers, in small groups, and individually at times to explore the world of food and flavor in a fun, no-pressure environment. Students do not handle hot or sharp equipment, but do get a chance to work with their hands every class to learn fundamental cooking and kitchen safety practices. Recipes are seasonally-minded and ingredients are sourced from local farmers markets when possible. Perfect for foodies and picky eaters alike, this class is equal parts tasting lab, food education, edible crafting, and cultural exploration.


Cooking for Kinders #

Taught by Lunch Bunch instructors, our lessons are written by our executive chef and certified teacher alongside our talented enrichment team. Lunch Bunch is on a mission to change kids’ nutrition and access to knowledge about healthy eating - and ultimately influence the role food can play in educating kids in a fun, creative, inspiring way. Our goal is to to build healthy habits that stick with kids and to get them excited to eat well while including them in the process!


Drawing & Painting Lab #

Children will learn the fundamentals of drawing and painting using a unique variety of materials like paint pens, oil pastels, colored pencils, acrylic paint and canvas. Taught by The Hero Workshop staff. Introduction to Dungeons and Dragons is an interactive storytelling workshop for Heroes in grades 3rd - 5th. Heroes will join a group for a weekly appointment with adventure, where one of our professional narrators (called a Dungeon Master) will present scenarios to the group, and together they decide what happens next in the story. Every participant will take on the role of a hero in a story, where we will explore concepts such as what it means to be a Hero, cooperative storytelling, encounter design, and narrative. Big moments in the story are decided by random chance with a roll of the dice. It’s fun, a great way to ignite the imagination, and we will touch on many educational aspects as part of our adventures including basic math, algebra, puzzle solving, teamwork and collaboration, and of course storytelling.


Engineering with Legos #

Taught by Play-Well Teknologies staff: teaching engineering to students. Create, play, and learn in this 1.5 hour class. Apply real-world concepts in physics, engineering, and architecture through engineer-designed projects such as chirping birds, blossoming flowers, and a paddle boat. Motorized pieces will be used. Let your imagination run wild with tens of thousands of LEGO® parts as we design and build leaping dolphins, buzzing beehives, and towering giraffes. Play, create, and learn in a world inspired by the animal kingdom. Design and build as never before and explore your ideas. An experienced instructor will challenge new and returning students to build at the next level! This class is not affiliated with the LEGO Group.


Hip-Hop/Jazz Dance #

Taught by Funky Divas & Dudes staff. Are you ready to rock? Learn the basic techniques of dance and how to move to the beat. We promote a healthy lifestyle through fun, physical activity that encourages self-expression through music and movement. We put on a rockin’ performance in costumes on the last day for family and friends to enjoy.

Taught by Ms. Kelci, improv teacher and actress. Ms. Kelci has worked with Missoula Children’s Theatre, The Hangar Theater’s Next Generation, The Theatre Institute at Sage, The Artsy Wagon, and more. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Musical Theatre, and has taken acting classes with Lesly Kahn, The Groundlings Studios, and Scott Seditas Studios. Improvisation is the art of acting, without a script. Does your child love playing pretend? Are they always making up silly stories? Do they come alive in front of an audience, or would they like to, but nerves have held them back? This is the right class for them! We work together to use our imaginations to explore characters, make up stories, and play pretend. This class is a safe space to learn more about acting, fearlessly. We play theater games of all sorts to work on creating characters, storylines, and to have a good laugh while doing it. This class also encourages teamwork, confidence, public speaking, and personal creativity.

Young learners will discover the joy of problem-solving and develop a solid foundation in essential math concepts. With each magical twist, students will gain confidence in their mathematical abilities, empowering them to tackle any mathematical challenge with enthusiasm and flair. Taught by Ms. Pepper & Staff, mindfulness instructors. This class teaches mindfulness through creativity, which is one of the easiest and most fun ways to teach children mindfulness and self-expression. These art projects and take-home crafts will inspire your kids to be as creative as they like while learning the tools of Mindfulness and self-regulation. This fall session will include projects such as: Gemstone Dig, custom yarn monograms, Animal Magnets, popcorn tree crafts, create-your-own scented butter Slime, acrylic canvas paintings, wood crafts, Kindness Garden rocks, colored sand art, painted succulent plant pots, Polymer Clay Creatures, and more. Classes will start with breathing exercises, and mindfulness is taught throughout the hour of class. All materials are included in cost.


Musical Theater #

Taught by Ms. Allie, dancer and teacher. Get into character! Come dance and act in a class where you will express yourself through performance. We will present songs and dances from one of the longest running Broadway hits, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats! this term. Ms. Allie will teach you fun songs and dances that you won’t be able to get out of your head! At the end of the term, students will showcase what we’ve been working on for friends and family. Now and forever, meow!


Nerf Sports #

Taught by ACE staff. Nerf Sports is a fun and safe way for students to build endurance; develop coordination, and work on new skills by playing all types of sports and games! Dribbling, passing, shooting and hand-eye coordination are all practiced as students enjoy basketball, soccer, dodgeball, capture the flag and more. This class is for all children, regardless of their skill level or experience. Our instructors will place emphasis on sportsmanship, teamwork, fairness, and fun. All equipment and materials provided.

Parkour #

Taught by Coach Lorenzo, professional traceur (practitioner of Parkour) and teacher. This program will teach children the fundamentals of climbing, crawling, jumping, rolling, running and vaulting over obstacles using the playground, a giant foam block and the environment. Parkour is about overcoming obstacles mentally and physically in our lives. Students will learn some team building exercises, gain confidence and get an amazing workout. Students should bring bottled water to stay hydrated and be ready to jump around.


Piano/Keyboard #

Taught by Maestro Coffey, musician and music teacher. This is a group class to introduce students to the joy of playing piano. Maestro has arranged and notated favorite children’s songs in an easy, fun way to play. Students should practice playing the songs often. Multiple studies show that music training and learning to read music is good for the developing brain. Maestro Coffey ensures that students will learn the essentials of music theory with favorite songs. Class will have a recital on the last day of the term. Parents will need to buy a roll-up keyboard (such as PicassoTiles PT49 available online for ~$25) and headphones with a 3.5 mm connector (such as Maxell 190319 available online for ~$5), which students will bring with them to school on Wednesdays for piano class. Printed music and other materials are supplied. Please leave all chargers and cables at home, as we do not have the capacity to charge keyboards during class. Also, please be sure to tell your child to bring and use their headphones during class. When the teacher plays with a group of students, we unplug headphones, but when the teacher moves to the next group and students practice on their own, it is much better for all when they use their headphones.

Taught by Mr. Alex, Pokémon enthusiast and teacher. Let’s become Pokémon Masters! Learn how to play the popular Pokémon Trading Card game, battle your friends, and immerse yourself in the exciting world of Pokémon. Students will learn interesting facts about Pokémon history, while becoming adept at the incredibly popular game. Students must have their own decks. We look forward to seeing where your Pokémon journey takes you. Please note: no cards will be won or traded permanently during class time!

Taught by Ms. Allie, dancer and teacher. Come stretch your imagination, as well as your toes, in this fairy tale dance class based on all of our favorite stories: Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Cinderella, Giselle, and many more. Through story dancing and the use of basic elements of ballet technique, students will start to learn how to tell a story using their bodies. Dancers will explore elements of creative movement, ballet, jazz, and choreography, in this delightful trip to all sorts of enchanted kingdoms! Feel free to dress up & bring slippers. We’ll have a performance at the last class.


Process Art #

Taught by Art Lessons LA staff. Art projects are process-based, with a focus on the art experience more than the final result. For each project, artists will explore a unique combination of materials, like washi tape, Mylar, clay, paint and wood. Students will apply techniques such as assemblage, sculpting, collaging, and layering to create fun, whimsical art pieces.

Self-Defense #

Sensei Ross is a Black Belt in Kenpo Karate with more than 15 years experience studying and teaching the martial arts. Continuing and new students are welcome. Although we all want to make this a safe and peaceful world for our children, reality can sometimes deliver unwelcome surprises. As adults, it is our responsibility to give our children the tools that will help keep them safe in any number of situations and to teach them to carry themselves with a confidence and awareness that will steer them away from danger. In Self-Discipline & Self-Defense, we will learn the fundamentals of defense, such as environmental awareness, blocks, kicks, strikes, stances, foot maneuvers, and the all-important KI-YAH! In addition to providing an excellent workout and instilling children with self-confidence, studying the martial arts stresses the value of being a good citizen, being kind to your peers, respectful to your elders, mindful of nutrition and diligent in your studies. Plus, it’s a lot of fun. Students will be working towards the goal of earning a gi (uniform), then belts.


Sew What!? #

Taught by Ms. Maya, fabrication arts instructor. This hand sewing class is for beginners and the experienced. Students will learn the basics of sewing and embroidery stitching, the safe use of sewing tools and the importance of planning and execution. Each of our projects take three to four weeks. We will use colorful felt fabrics, trims, embroidery threads and beads to create beautiful items. All materials are included. See examples of students project here.


Soccer #

Taught by ACE Enrichment staff. The soccer class will focus on rules and strategy of soccer as well as the development of ball handling, passing, shooting, offensive and defensive skills. We will build endurance, develop coordination and learn how to play as a team! Players will scrimmage each week and work on skills & drills in a fun & friendly environment. Everyone can participate regardless of ability. All equipment and materials provided.


Stop Motion Animation #

Taught by Mr. Nick, filmmaker and teacher. Create your own little stop motion videos in this class. Students will use paper, toys (bring your own if you like) and teamwork to make their stories come to life. We’ll use iPads/tablets to film, edit and show our work.


Tae Kwon Do #

Taught by Mr. Alonzo, Master Tae Kwon Do teacher. Have fun developing coordination and the mental strength to face a variety of life’s tests. Using encouragement and humor, students are taught not only effective self-defense techniques, but they will build self-confidence and self-discipline. Taught by Coach Susan, award-winning youth tennis coach (USPTA & PTR certified). Learn tennis by exploring 4 areas of focus: Technical (forehand/backhand/serves), Tactical, Athleticism (agility, balance, coordination, speed, strength), and Mental (emotional, confidence). Perfect for beginners. Coach Susan brings all the equipment: a portable net, beginner children’s tennis balls (Red Balls), and rackets. Students should wear sneakers, and shorts or pants.


Ukulele/Guitar #

Taught by Mr. Gaku, session guitarist, producer, and seasoned performer. This class is a great introduction to the joy of playing music. The ukulele is a small string instrument which kindergarten students can handle with their small hands. Older students who want to learn to play guitar are also welcome. The instructor will teach how to play simple holiday songs and children’s songs. Students will learn basic music reading skills using color stickers. No books or scores are required. The instructor will provide a folder with music scores, color system/tuning instructions, and stickers. (The folder will have different music scores every semester.) A ukulele or guitar is required for this class. Ukuleles can be found for as little as $40 online or in local stores.


Violin/Viola #

Private study with Jody Rubin, who has performed with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, the LA Philharmonic and the LA Opera Orchestra. Ms. Rubin can also be heard on such soundtracks as Pirates of the Caribbean and X-Men. Get a head start on the 4th grade instrumental music class and develop and supplement skills introduced in school. 30-minute lessons consist of foundation studies such as note reading, rhythm, and scales as well as learning pieces that can be performed with piano accompaniment. Lessons are taught in the instructor’s home in the Sunkist Park area. Students must be vaccinated for COVID-19. Beginners to advanced students are welcome. Bring your own violin or viola, or email Ms. Rubin if you wish to buy or rent.


Watercolor #

Taught by Teacher Tamara, artist and designer. Students will be introduced to basic watercolor painting techniques such as wet on wet, wet on dry, and dry on dry. Various artistic materials will be used along with watercolor to create texture and structure. Each week, we will be observing images of animals and objects and recreate them on your own paper! Watercolor painting is a great activity to learn and understand the fundamental elements of painting like color theory and value.


Wild Child Sports #

Taught by Wild Child Gym staff. This class is a great introduction to sports. Children will learn the fundamentals of a variety of sports in an active, fun and inclusive way. From team-building to individual skill development, Wild Child’s coaches will build each child’s self-esteem, coordination, strength and core skill set through active play. Weaving in playful games and a weekly muscle focus, this program will give students the fundamentals to confidently throw, catch, jump, kick, shoot and more. Students are encouraged to bring water and dress comfortably.


Yoga Play #

Taught by Zooga Yoga staff. Come with us on an imaginative yoga adventure around the world. Yogis will develop their focus, strength, flexibility and coordination in this fun and active themed-yoga class. We practice the basics of a real yoga routine through the use of playful yoga games, easy yoga postures and our very own Zooga music. Students also learn breathing, mindful meditation and visualization techniques, a sense of self and respect for others on our unique yoga adventures. All skill and experience levels welcome. Great for kids with ADHD and little athletes. We provide yoga mats.


Zoology #

Taught by Critter Squad staff. Meet live animals and learn about their world. Some are furry, some are feathered, some have a lot of legs, but they are all coming to visit, and they are safe and friendly. Each class will feature educational games and activities and a visit with a real live animal.
